Lara Owen said it best in her guide to a balanced menstrual cycle, Her Blood Is Gold: “It may be that one of the functions of PMS is that through hostility, women repel those around them, and therefore are able to have a little time to themselves.” How’s that for a different take on PMS? I found that when I began to pick up this pattern consciously, I stopped needing to have crazy fights and wild outbursts just before my period; what actually wanted to happen was a clearing up of any relationship difficulties in my life.” Let’s add another item to the list of functions our menstrual cycle can serve in our life: shrink.

If you find yourself getting incredibly irritable each and every month, use some of the solitude you will now create for yourself during the week as a chance to ask yourself, What am I not saying that needs to be said? What am I not doing that needs to be done? Acting on the answers you get will not only relieve your premenstrual symptoms, but it will also change your relationships and your life for the better.
